Purpose of Position

The Building Code Inspector works under the direction of the Building & Planning Director in organizing and directing all building code inspections in the City of Senatobia.  This individual oversees the inspection of buildings to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances relating to construction, electrical, plumbing, gas and mechanical installations.  Work is performed with a wide-range scope to exercise independent judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and organizes post-permitting inspections, regulatory and code enforcement services related to all phases of building construction, electrical, plumbing, gas and mechanical installations.
  • Makes all required inspections or accepts reports of inspections by approved agencies or individuals.
  • Assist the Building & Planning Director in the review of plans and specifications to determine compliance with existing codes and ordinances prior to the issuance of permits; confers with engineers, architects and contractors to resolve design problems and to interpret code requirements.
  • Works with Building & Planning Director, City Clerk, Mayor, Board of Alderman and the Planning Commission members related to the enforcement of codes adopted by the City.
  • Issue all types of building and planning permits as needed.
  • Assists the Building & Planning Director as necessary in the interest of public health, safety and general welfare to recommend to the Mayor and Board of Alderman to adopt any rules and/or regulations to interpret and implement the provisions of City codes. Such rules will not violate or have the effect of waiving the structural or fire performance or engineering practice involving public safety.
  • Assists the Building & Planning Director and the Building Code Administrator as needed with actions of the Planning Commission.
  • Assists the Building Code Administrator in making zoning, permitting, sign and floodplain determinations.
  • Inspects, records and documents code violations.
  • Enforcement of the City of Senatobia Rental Housing Code Ordinance. Inspects all registered rental properties in the City.  Documents and maintains all records pertaining to the City’s Rental Housing Code Ordinance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience & Knowledge

  • A high school graduate or its equivalent and considerable experience in building code inspection including municipal land use regulations and ordinances
  • Thorough knowledge of modern developments, current literature and information related to municipal building inspection.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern building construction methods materials and inspection techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of the requirements of the family of International codes.
  • Ability to review plans and specifications and to determine compliance with applicable codes and ordinance provisions.
  • Ability to read, evaluate and interpret codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, architects, developers, realtors and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, department heads, elected officials and the general public.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Knowledge of “CloudPermit” permitting software, preferred.

Preferred Licenses or Certificates

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Course certifications in residential and commercial building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical through the International Code Council are preferred; however, he or she shall obtain residential certifications within two years of employment.
  • Complete all necessary continuing education hours in order to maintain all course certifications.

Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50+ pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment.  Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform essential functions.  Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors.  Ability to move freely about, in and around construction sites.

The City requires a background check and a pre-employment drug screening.

The City of Senatobia is looking to hire a Laborer for the Gas Department. The work is primary performed outdoors with exposure to the elements. The job will require the ability to lift 50 lbs, use standard equipment, be available for on call work (nights and weekends), working on natural gas lines, reliable transportation, and any other duties needed. Knowledge of working heavy equipment a plus.

Normal Operating Days and hours are Monday through Friday 7am to 4pm, with possible on call work.

The City of Senatobia is looking to hire a downtown beautification laborer for the Public Works Department.  The work is primarily performed outdoors with exposure to all elements and mainly in the downtown and city park areas.  The job will require some of the following: mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, weed control, pest control, picking up garbage, emptying garbage, maintaining flower beds, maintenance, and repair to city park property.  This job will also require knowledge of and operation of small engine equipment such as mowers, edgers, weed eaters, and blowers, the ability to lift up to 75lbs, and a valid MS Driver’s License.

General knowledge of landscaping, supervising employees, working independently,

The hours of work will be primarily Monday through Friday 7am to 4pm, with some after-hours and weekend work.

The City of Senatobia is accepting applications for the Water Department. Duties will include maintaining the city’s water lines, installing new water lines, emergency shut off, and other duties as needed.

The City of Senatobia is looking to hire Class B CDL Drivers in the Public Works Department. Candidates must have and maintain a valid CDL license. Job duties include operating knuckleboom and sanitation trucks, in a safe and productive manner. Recognize safety hazards (overhead powerlines, etc.) and hidden property. Perform daily walk around inspections of the vehicles (tires, fluid levels, safety equipment, etc.). Reporting all equipment defects to the supervisor. Pickup household and non-household rubbish on weekly routes and transporting rubbish to the dump. This job is primarily in an outside environment, exposed to all types of weather; hot, cold, dry, wet, etc. Must be willing to work in inclement weather during emergency conditions. Heavy lifting is required. This is a full-time position that requires regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
